Favorite Pesto Sauce

There is nothing more delicious than a refreshing basil pesto sauce. I could eat this by the spoonful because it is just THAT good! Since becoming GF/DF/SF I found it nearly impossible to find a jar of pesto sauce that didn't contain cow's milk. Once we realized that the kids were only intolerant to cow's milk and not goat/sheep milk, it made it a lot easier to substitute those in.

Pesto is a great addition to so many dishes. Some of our favorites are; spaghetti squash & turkey meatballs(GF Turkey Meatball recipe), zoodles & chicken, veggie pasta, as pizza sauce and even over an egg scramble! The possibilities are endless, or should I say 'pestobilities' (that one is for you Mom 😜).

Allergy Substitutes: If you have an allergy to all dairy then you can easily substitute the Pecorino Romano with Nutritional Yeast. Use 3 Tablespoons of Nutritional Yeast in replace of the 1/2 cup of Pecorino Romano. You could also leave this out all together and scale back on the olive oil. You will just be missing the "cheesy" taste, which is one of my favorite things about Pesto!

For a nut allergy, just leave out the pine nuts. Add in a tablespoon of lemon juice to give it a little extra flavor and to maintain its bright green color.

Storing Pesto: You can refrigerate the pesto for up to 3 days in a sealed container. You may want to add a thin layer of olive oil on top of the pesto to prevent browning. You can also easily freeze this pesto sauce for up to 3 months! You can freeze it in a freezer friendly container or separate it into an ice cube tray then once frozen, transfer the pesto cubes into a freezer bag and re-freeze until ready to use.

I hope you love this pesto sauce as much as we do! I have a sensitivity to tomatoes and can rarely eat them without breaking out in hives. Pesto is a wonderful alternative to tomato sauce or just a great year round option. Enjoy!

I love pesto and I have fun substituting different ingredients depending what I have in the fridge. Arugula for basil. Walnuts for pine nuts. Etc.
